Utilization of HIV and Related Services from the Private Health Sector: Multicountry Analysis

The continued spread of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is burdening the health care system in many developing countries. Recent global commitment has led to unprecedented levels of funding for the HIV response, of which a substantial proportion is directed toward governments and nongovernmental organizations (NGO). Despite its potential to be an effective partner in national AIDS responses, the private sector has been largely overlooked. In light of the global goal of "universal access to comprehensive prevention programs, treatment, care and support by 2010" and public sector capacity constraints, the increased participation of private providers may be beneficial in meeting the growing demand for HIV and related services. Mounting evidence points to the expanding role of the private sector in providing health services such as family planning and child health services. Yet, little is known about the extent to which the private sector delivers HIV/AIDS services. To understand the role of the private health sector in this vital area and thus inform policy decisions, it is important to document the current utilization of private sector–provided HIV and related services and explore the profiles of the clients seeking such services.
