Market Assessment of Prepaid Health Schemes: Summary of Findings

In this presentation, Dr. Nelson Gitonga shares the key findings of a market assessment of Kenya’s private prepaid health schemes. Some of the key findings are that there is adequate coverage for the most common causes of morbidity but non-communicable conditions have gaps in coverage, the schemes require minimal copayments for inpatient care, administrative expenses are within international benchmarks but commission rates may need to be reviewed to further reduce costs, and the key access barriers for consumers are high cost of premiums, a poor image of insurance companies and medical insurance plans, and a lack of information on the benefits of risk pooling.
