Provider Payment Mechanisms

In this presentation, Dr. Edward Rukwaro of the Mediheal Group of Hospitals compares the various types of provider payment methods and mechanisms and their impact on efficiency, quality, and access. He states that a well-designed provider payment mechanism should meet the three objectives of quality, efficiency, and accessibility; allow providers to earn a reasonable income and maintain good quality of care; and prevent waste and unnecessary service provision. No single provider payment mechanism includes the best incentives, he argues, and a combination of payment mechanisms may be necessary to achieve these goals.
