Wealth, Long-Acting Contraception, and the Private Sector

This presentation explores the relationship between household wealth and a woman's decision to use a long-acting and permanent method of contraception, as well as her choice to obtain it through the private sector. Reviewing evidence from Demographic and Health Surveys from 14 countries, the research found that wealthier women are more likely than poorer women to use long-acting and permanent methods (except in South Asia), and use the private sector for these methods. However, in several countries a substantial proportion of poorer women rely on the private sector for long-acting and permanent methods. This presentation was given at the International Conference on Family Planning by Jay Gribble in November 2013.
