The workplace is now recognized as an important setting for health promotion in industrialized countries, and interest is growing in the wider role that business can play as a partner in health development. Private sector business plays a dominant role as the driver of current global economic development, and globalisation is bringing new social and economic challenges. For those concerned with promoting well-being, it is essential that policies and programmes are adjusted to address this new reality and that the business community is, as far as possible, engaged as a partner in the promotion of well-being. In this new world, business has a vested interest and a shared responsibility for the promotion of the well-being of the three fifths of the world's citizens who reside in the newly-opened economies, many of whom are exposed to new risks arising from the downside of globalisation.
