About the Healthy Markets Community of Practice

The Healthy Markets Community of Practice (HMCoP) is an evolution from the Total Market Approach Technical Working Group (TMA TWG) which has been operational since 2014. The HMCoP convenes partners to share best practices, experiences, and resources to catalyze private sector approaches and enhance market development, with a focus on family planning (FP) and sexual and reproductive health (SRH) programming. The goal of the group is to develop healthy markets that are responsive, equitable, resilient, led by local actors and driven by consumer needs.

FHM Engage is the Secretariat for the HMCoP. The current co-chairs are USAID (represented by Andrea Bare) and UNFPA (represented by Ben Light).

About HMCoP Meetings

HMCoP activities focus on supporting knowledge exchange, documentation, and implementation research efforts. Sessions focus on a single country and are dynamic with multiple speakers and topics highlighting data/intelligence, tools, and interventions that help improve the understanding and functioning of the country’s FP/SRH market. Sessions are interactive to facilitate information exchange around market development and private sector engagement. Topics of discussion may delve further into users, demand/supply of information, services products as core market functions, and also consider supporting functions such as financing, market intel, rules/regs/norms, and stewardship. We will encourage discussion around questions such as:

 • How might the core functions of demand and/or supply be strengthened with greater local private sector engagement?

 • How can we improve supporting functions to facilitate FP market development?

We encourage participation by in-country partners and actors including the local private sector. Ultimately, the goal of each session is to generate awareness of family planning market development and private sector engagement work happening in countries and for participants to leave with a greater understanding and appreciation of participating country’s health market.
