Promoting Family Planning, Maternal, and Child Health through Beauty Parlors in Afghanistan: Baseline Results

The SHOPS Plus team in Afghanistan is collaborating with the Afghan Social Marketing Organization (ASMO) to implement an innovative pilot in Kabul to train 200 beauty parlor staff to deliver information to female clients on key, often-stigmatized health topics including family planning. A mixed-method study with a randomized controlled trial design seeks to assess the feasibility of the pilot model and estimate the impact of the intervention on desired outcomes.

This presentation showcases key findings from the pre-intervention quantitative survey of parlor clients to understand their knowledge, attitudes, and health practices. ASMO used survey results to inform focus areas for pilot implementation. The survey also validated the pilot approach by confirming that parlor clients visit beauty shops frequently and feel comfortable discussing health topics with their beautician.
