Final International Confederation of Midwives Pre-Congress Workshop Report

Following discussions with Mary Ellen Stanton, USAID, Global Health Bureau and Deb Armbruster, Preventing Post-Partum Hemorrhage Initiative, PATH, in February 2005, PSP-One and Banking on Health (BoH), both USAID funded projects, explored the possibility of targeting midwives as an important and viable population for improving private sector reproductive health and family planning (RH/FP) services. The PSP-One BoH team developed a concept paper and was approved by USAID/Washington to sponsor a two-day Pre-Congress workshop at the 27th Triennial Congress of the International Confederation of Midwives (ICM), in Brisbane, Australia in July 2005. The workshop took place on July 22-23, 2005. Midwives attending the workshop also participated in the ICM Congress from July 24 –28, 2005. In addition to presentations on quality improvement and skills to improve one's business practice, participants were provided with a Quality Assessment tool to assess the quality of their own practice, a tool to conduct a SWOT analysis, sample cashflow statements, and an outline to assist in shaping requests for technical assistance proposals from the PSP-One and BoH projects.
