Preliminary Results of the Impact of a Free SMS Info Service on Family Planning Knowledge in Kenya

This poster describes an evaluation that SHOPS conducted of a free mobile health platform piloted by FHI 360 under the USAID-funded PROGRESS project. Mobiles for Reproductive Health (m4RH) offers a variety of information related to reproductive health, including advantages, disadvantages, myths, and side effects for nine methods of family planning; locations of nearby clinics that offer family planning; and short stories aimed at dispelling family planning myths. Through a randomized controlled design, SHOPS measured the impact of accessing m4RH service on knowledge about contraceptive methods and on use of contraceptive methods. Preliminary results indicate m4RH increases knowledge of family planning. This poster was presented by Doug Johnson at the Population Association of America's annual meeting in April 2014.
