This presentation reviews trends in the use of modern contraceptives (long-acting, permanent, and short-acting methods) sourced from the private sector (for-profit and nonprofit) over the past 20 years. Drawing data from 36 countries' Demographic and Health Surveys, it compares these trends in modern contraceptive use across three regions: Asia, Africa, and Latin America and the Caribbean. It was presented at the Population Association of America annual meeting in May 2014 in Boston. A version of the presentation was also given at the 2013 International Conference on Family Planning in Addis Ababa and at a panel event held in March 2014 by the SHOPS project in Washington, D.C.
