South Sudan Case Study

South Sudan has one of the highest childhood mortality rates in the world, with an infant mortality rate of 102 and an under five mortality rate of 135 per 1,000 live births.  The Ministry of Health in South Sudan has formal guidelines in place for treatment of children under five for malaria, pneumonia and diarrhea through a community based approach.  The study examines this approach and found that community training is most effective when working closely with the Ministry of Health and when links are made to the public health facilities.
