Jordan ORS Case Study

Dehydration due to diarrhea was a substantial cause of childhood mortality in Jordan until the early 1980s, when infrastructure improvements in drinking water and solid waste sanitation greatly reduced the incidence of diarrheal diseases. Scale-up involved funding and technical support from UNICEFand USAID’s Technologies for Primary Health Care program (PRITECH), with high level support from the Ministry of Health (MoH). This case study examines the scale up efforts in Jordan, including the country context, distribution activities, scale-up approach, and impact. The case study examines product development, marketing campaign results, regulatory issues, improving provider knowledge, supply and financing.  It found that although diarrhea was a common illness among children in Jordan, it was no longer considered a serious problem . Awareness of ORS has remained nearly universal since the ORS scale-up, but is currently used in only 20% of childhood diarrhea cases.

How Evidence-Based Medicine Affects Private Sector Doctors: A Randomized Experiment in Jordan

This presentation describes the SHOPS study on the impact of an evidence-based medicine intervention in Jordan. The intervention was aimed at dispelling private doctors’ misconceptions and biases related to Depot Medroxyprogesterone Acetate (DMPA), a 3-month hormonal injectable contraceptive on knowledge of DMPA and its side effects, attitudes toward and confidence in administering DMPA, and reported clinical practices such as discussion and prescription of DMPA. It was presented at the Making Impact Evaluation Matter: Better Evidence for Effective Policies and Programmes conference in Manila on September 4, 2014.

Addressing Provider Bias through Evidence-Based Medicine

This study examines the impact of an evidence-based medicine program on family planning providers’ knowledge, attitudes, and reported clinical practices in Jordan. The findings suggest that this program, particularly as a standalone intervention, might not be effective when there is strong provider and consumer bias against a contraceptive method.

Using Evidence-Based Medicine to Overcome Barriers to Modern Contraceptive Use

The Strengthening Family Planning project in Jordan (Ta’ziz Tanzim Al Usra, in Arabic) implemented an evidence-based medicine strategy to respond to the need for scientifically based information to address widely held misconceptions about the side effects and perceived harm of modern contraceptive methods, particularly hormonal methods. A 2010 assessment found that the evidence-based medicine intervention under a predecessor project improved private physicians’ knowledge, attitudes, and practices regarding combined oral contraceptive pills.

The Strengthening Family Planning project completed a rigorous impact evaluation of the evidence-based medicine program for the contraceptive injection, DMPA, which has had a very low acceptance rate in Jordan due to side effect concerns. Although the evaluation results were inconclusive, the study showed evidence of a positive short-term impact on improvement in providers’ attitudes toward DMPA and an increase in provider willingness and comfort prescribing DMPA to their clients.

This presentation was made by Maha Al-Saheb at the International Conference on Family Planning in November 2013.
