FHM Engage Conducted Market Descriptions in India, Kenya, Liberia, Madagascar, Nepal, Nigeria, Pakistan

FHM Engage uses a market development approach (MDA) to understand a country’s health market system. The MDA allows us to diagnose root causes of market under-performance, such as restricted supply of and consumer demand for health products and services. FHM Engage supports local public and private market actors to design locally informed strategies and solutions that improve market systems, including core functions of supply and demand and supporting functions that strengthen the enabling environment for market growth.

As a critical foundational step to the MDA, FHM Engage compiled detailed market descriptions in India, Kenya, Liberia, Madagascar, Nepal, Nigeria, Pakistan. Review them here:

Introducing the Women’s Health and Livelihood Alliance (WOHLA)

USAID’s FHM Engage partnered with Samhita’s Collective Good Foundation (Samhita-CGF) to launch the Women’s Health and Livelihood Alliance (WOHLA), a multi-stakeholder initiative designed to empower women in underserved communities across India by addressing the intersecting aspects of their health and economic wellbeing.

WOHLA is designed to serve as a health marketplace catalyst and aims to empower women by mobilizing resources and increasing their access to sexual and reproductive health information, services, and products. Additionally, WOHLA seeks to enhance women’s financial and digital literacy, thereby fostering livelihood opportunities and promoting workforce participation.

Samhita-CGF will leverage its experience in developing alliances – such as REVIVE, the India Protectors Fund, Indian Pharmaceutical Alliance, and the Corporate WASH platform – and its corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives to engage foundations, other CSR funders, and implementation partners to support market development approaches that address the ‘will-skill gap’ among family planning value chain stakeholders.

On March 21, 2024, a formal launch event took place in New Delhi with an array of presentations and discussions. USAID’s Assistant Administrator for Global Health Dr. Atul Gawande provided a keynote address. Other featured speakers included Ms. Veena Reddy [USAID], Ms. Anna Roy [Niti Aayog – the apex public policy think tank of the Government of India], and other public and private sector participants. In attendance were also CEOs and leaders from public and private sector who are supporting WOHLA as signatories of a pledge.

Key Statements:

USAID Assistant Administrator for Global Health, Dr. Atul Gawande, said, "When women are given the opportunity to thrive, the entire community thrives too. Women’s economic security and rights is the critical foundation for communities, peace, and resilient economies. The Women’s Health and Livelihood Alliance in India provides career development and job opportunities for women and expands access to sexual and reproductive health care – services that promote gender equity and economic security for women."

Dr. Amit Bhanot, India Country Director and Chief of Party, FHM Engage, said,WOHLA is designed to mobilize private sector resources, foster partnerships, and implement targeted interventions to cultivate an ecosystem that prioritizes the symbiotic relationship between women’s reproductive health and professional advancement. The benefits are far-reaching and may even eliminate gender-based violence.”

Priya Naik, Founder and CEO at Samhita Social Ventures Pvt Ltd, said, “Deeply committed to advancing the well-being of women and girls through multiple WOHLA interventions, we aim to increase access to reproductive healthcare information, products and services and unlock access to livelihood interventions for empowering young women.”

Healthy Markets Community of Practice
Meeting Focus: Family Planning Market Challenges in India

To register for this event, please email Elizabeth Peña (FHM Engage) epena@FHM-Engage.org

The Healthy Markets Community of Practice (HMCoP) is an evolution from the Total Market Approach Technical Working Group (TMA TWG) which has been operational since 2014. Frontier Health Markets (FHM) Engage acts as the Secretariat, and USAID and UNFPA are the co-chairs.

The HMCoP holds a webinar every month to share work and best practice amongst partners working to increase utilization of health services from the private sector and improve the participation of private market actors in family planning (FP) and sexual reproductive health (SRH). The goal of the sessions is to generate awareness of FP market development and private sector engagement work happening in various countries and for participants to leave with greater understanding and appreciation of the country’s health market.

The next meeting of the HMCoP will focus on FP market challenges in India and possible market development interventions. In this meeting, the HMCoP will feature speakers that will highlight tools and interventions that help us improve the understanding and functioning of the FP market in India.

Speakers:

1 Shankar Narayanan, Senior Technical Advisor for Market Development with USAID's FHM Engage, will speak on FP market challenges in India and possible market development interventions.
As an advisor for FHM Engage, Shankar plays an important role in the program's technical unit for market development across key markets in Asia and Africa. Notably, he spearheaded the India Market Description for Family Planning in 2023, contributing significantly to the program's design. Shankar pioneered market development at PSI India, where he championed initiatives in Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) and Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR). Under his leadership, the WASH market development and partnerships evolved into the national level Technical Support Unit (TSU), impacting millions of households. Moreover, his strategic guidance led to substantial growth in the blended financing corpus, skyrocketing from $1.2 million to a $100 million portfolio for toilet construction through the WASH Institute, where he continues to serve on the advisory board. His expertise lies in crafting strategies and designing large-scale programs that bridge the public-private divide. Shankar has a degree in electronics and management diplomas in entrepreneurship and business analytics. He firmly believes in harnessing the power of markets for efficient resource allocation and to drive impactful change.

2 Komal Khanna, Senior Social Behavior Change Advisor with USAID India, will discuss her USAID India SHOPS Plus experiences around stewardship and demand mobilization for FP.
Komal Khanna is the Senior Social Behavior Change Advisor with USAID India. She has a master’s degree in economics and Diploma in Marketing Management.
